What do research & development companies do?

There are different types of research and development companies and institutions in Western New York. Also known as R&D, these life sciences companies and institutions may conduct a wide variety of activities from laboratory research to clinical trials involving humans to the manufacture of products used by other researchers.

Many of the products, testing results, and discoveries from these research and development companies and institutions are then used by pharmaceutical companies to make new drugs - or by diagnostic companies to make new tests - or even by medical device companies to make new products.

What types of people do they employ?

Research and development organizations employ a variety of different kinds of individuals ranging from those highly trained in sciences to those with limited technical background, including manufacturing technicians, sales representatives, lab assistants, research scientists, operations managers, human resources assistants, lawyers, and engineers.
